Umbra Hominis Pitch Script
The Story
The story is about a horror movie fanatic who has psychosis and then makes his condition worse by viewing lots of horror movies, he then begins to live out his own horror movie and starts to experience visions influenced by the films he has watched.
The story will encompass most of the ideas surrounding psychosis and its effects on the mind.
The story will take place over the course of 5 periods, this will allow us to develop the main character more due to him starting to act in a strange way and his friends/ teachers noticing that there is something wrong with him.
The main antagonist of the film will be a shadowy figure called ‘Umbra Hominis’ this figure will appear only for the Main Character (Tom) and will exist solely to scare and mess with Tom, this character is the cumulation of his psychosis and all the villains in the horror movies that he has watched.
The Genre
The Genre of the movie is Psychological horror, it aims to provoke intrigue in the people who watch it. This is due to the aim of making Umbra Hominis scary but realistic enough to be believable, but still include elements to scare viewers.
We chose this genre because we believe that the best horror movies are psychological horrors, these are great movies such as ‘Psycho’. We are going to use these as some of the horror movies that Tom has watched, and include references to them.
The Marketing
Umbra Hominis is targeted towards people who love horror movies, this is due to the main character watching lots of horror movies, therefore meaning that there will be references to horror movies in it. It will appeal to people who enjoy thought provoking horror movies as they will wonder if the film could happen in real life to somebody with psychosis.
The demographic we have chosen to target is people who are aged 18 and over. This is because they are more likely to have a more in depth understanding of what mental health issues can cause (and how traumatic they can be), this is in the hope that they have had lessons on these problems throughout the educational system.
Another reason why we think that this demographic is suitable is because a large amount of horror movies are rated due 18+ due to their contents
The Advertising
The video trailers would be short and mysterious, to mirror the amount of time in one period at the school, this is because an hour is a relatively short period of time. The trailers would try to capture the fast rate at which the protagonist’s psychosis is getting worse.
The website would be simple, before the release of the movie it would just be a countdown to the release date of the movie with shadowy figures moving in the background. This again would be changed when the movie releases so that more people will go and buy the DVD or watch it on their chosen streaming provider.
We would post small parts of the story to Reddit, they would be told as if they are real life stories on horror orientated sub-Reddits (such as r/nosleep). This would create interest in the whole story due to people wanting to know what happens to Tom.
The BFI
The requirements to get funding from the BFI is 18 points or over. As you can see we have a total of 28 points. We are confident we would get funding from the BFI if we applied for it. This is due to meeting a large range of the requirements such as being filmed, produced and written in England and being made by British people
