Umbra Hominis - 1st draft of pitch

This is our script for the pitch. It is likely to change when we go through our pitch and practice it. Umbra Hominis Pitch  Script   The Story   The story is about  a horror movie  fanatic  who has psychosis and then makes his condition worse by viewing lots of horror movies, he then begins to live out his own horror movie and starts to experience visions influenced by the films he has watched.   The story will encompass most of the ideas surrounding psychosis and its effects on the mind.   The story will take place over the course of 5 periods, this will allow us to develop the main  character more due to him starting to act in a strange way and his friends/ teachers noticing that there is something wrong with him.   The main antagonist of the film will be a shadowy figure called ‘Umbra Hominis’ this figure will appear only for the Main Character (Tom)  and will exist solely to scare and mess with Tom, ...

Umbra Hominis - Identifying possible questions in the pitch

Image
When we went through the original script we realised that we didn't have anything for the costs of our production. We decided to include these as estimates because it is an important factor in order to get funding from the BFI. This is because we aim for this movie to be an independent horror, independent movies normally have a small budget because they don't have the funding of a parent company/subsidiaries to lean on. In order to make these estimates we completed a bit of research into the cost of equipment and then used the prices to work out an estimate. We then included these estimates into our pitch so that the BFI will have a better idea about the amount of money that we are asking for, instead of it being an amount that isn't stated.

Umbra Hominis - Updated treatment

T itle : Umbra Hominis We chose this title because we liked the idea of having something slightly latin about the character because it is a lesser known language and would not be understood unless extra research is done into the character. Log Line : A young boy confused and abused by his own mind is taunted into insanity. We changed the log line from being different from the tag line as we thought of something more mysterious and deep to put as the log line. Tag Line : The real evil is within (see above) Synopsis Is the Umbra Hominis a figment of his imagination or the real incarnation of what man can become? Tom Jefferson suffers from psychosis, after running out of pills a strange feeling turns into a sickness that can't be cured. Not helped by his love of the horror genre his Psychosis escalates until he reaches the point that things seen on screen come to life and taunt him. It all starts one morning when in his English class Tom starts to see that the windows a...

Umbra Hominis - Client considerations

Following our pitch to the client and the questions that we were asked, it became clear that we needed to update our treatment in order to inform our client on our BFI funding and the age rating that we are aiming for. This includes adding more detail about the reasons why we are aiming for an age rating of 18 and why their funding is important to us. We may not have included enough information on this due to being eager to start the production of the actual product instead of thinking into the strengths and weaknesses of the idea that we chose to produce, and how they could be worked on to turn them all into strengths. In order to improve the treatment that we will present to the BFI we will need to improve our synopsis and ensure that the storyboard is clear and easy to follow to make it clear how characters will interact and how the story will progress. In doing this we hope to notice key areas that are at risk of being mis-interpreted or mis-understood and ensure that all of our ...

Umbra Hominis - Pitch Feedback

Based on the ideas We are going to go with the idea of a psychological horror movie. This is because it will work well with our idea as it will make our movie more realistic. This is because people with mental health issues find themselves in unfamiliar places unable to remember what they have done. This links to our aim to make the movie as realistic as possible because by including these key symptoms of mental illness we are making the movie less paranormal. Based on the pitch We may end up changing the way that we edit our opening. This will be in the from of a switch from editing on the Mac to editing on a Windows laptop. This will mean that we can edit anytime we want due to owning the laptop and it being portable. As a result we will be able to spend more time editing or opening in order to make it as good as possible.

Umbra Hominis - Consent form

Image
This consent form states that I am allowed to be in the film that I am acting in. This has to be completed due to me being under the age of 18. There are also consent forms for the other people in my group. Tom Evans and Tom Hodgetts. We also had to get the consent forms for the other people in our opening sequence.

Strengths and weaknesses of chosen idea

Image
One of our strengths for our idea is that it is realistic. People who suffer from Psychosis find that they do things that they don't remember because their 'other' self did those things. This also helps to make the movie more realistic. We decided to go with the mental health issue idea because we thought that it could be the one that can have the most of an impact on the people watching it. This is due to it having no supernatural elements in it. However, a weakness of our idea is that we are aiming to be realistic. This is a weakness because we also have to make sure that our portrayal of the issues that the character is realistic and that we don't use any stereotypes that are untrue.

Umbra Hominis - Risk Assessment

Image
This is the risk assessment for Umbra Hominis. There aren't a lot of risks due to us not using a lot of props. The main risk is tripping due to the mask obscuring vision and the cloak being long, so it's easy to trip over.

Umbra Hominis - Promotional materials

Image
There is only promotional material for Umbra Hominis, A poster that Tom Evans made. The idea of the poster is to look like it is in an abandoned school. This links to the main character's mind slowly breaking down and becoming worse. The Umbra Hominis is at the end of the corridor as a way of hinting what is going to happen in the movie to people who pay close attention to the background details.

Umbra Hominis - Pitch PowerPoint and script

Here is the link to the PowerPoint used in the pitch. This PowerPoint includes the storyboard and title slides for key areas of our horror opening idea. These include Psychological horror, The Audience, The Advertising and The BFI. (See below the script for screenshots of all of the slides) The script is the one that we followed when we delivered the pitch (as you can see in our pitch video).
